Doctor and roll cleaning blades are used to clean rolls and remove stock accumulations, water, pitch, and filler buildup in process industries such as paper, tissue, food, carbon fiber, metals, construction, textiles, and nonwovens. Setting and maintaining the proper blade angle is critical to maximize blade performance. If a blade angle is not adjusted properly, the blade will not effectively clean the roll surface, the blade may wear too quickly or cause damage to the roll. It could even develop into a safety risk.

Often a tool or gauge can be used to set the proper angle for blades and scrapers for improved performance. To determine the blade angle with the digital AngleSet gauge follow these simple steps.

Step 1: As shown below, slide the blade away from the edge of the roll, place the foot of the AngleSet gauge on the roll surface and slide it towards the blade. Then align the notch in the bottom of the foot with the contact point of the blade.

Step 2:  Hold the gauge steady and press and release the “ZERO” button. The gauge should read “0.0”.

Step 3: As shown in the photo below, place the foot of the AngleSet gauge directly on the blade.  The gauge should be placed at the top of the blade as close to the bevel as possible. The reading on the gauge is the blade angle.

A blade is properly aligned when the angle is the same on both sides. If the blade is not aligned, there will be areas that don't make uniform contact with the roll.  Adjust the roll cleaning system until the blade angle is uniform on both sides of the roll.
