Meet Team Kadant - Matt Mitchell, R&D / Product Engineer

R&D / Project Engineer
Worked at Kadant Johnson Since: August 2010

Tell me about your career path and how you got to Kadant Johnson.
I was an intern at Kadant Solutions Division in Auburn, Massachusetts for a couple of summers during college. After graduating from Michigan Technological University, I found a position with Kadant Johnson as a field service engineer based in Three Rivers, Michigan. I knew I wanted to stay in Michigan, so it ended up working out pretty well.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?
Getting to interact and be involved with many different departments and divisions within the Company.

What do you think is the most important quality for success?
Keeping a positive attitude and focusing on the benefits of any opportunity.

Any special recognitions, awards or accomplishments you’re particularly proud of?
Finishing my Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering while traveling as a field service engineer was quite challenging. Lots of homework on airplanes and in hotel rooms.

How did you develop an interest in engineering?
In high school I worked as a machinist and have always had a natural aptitude for science and math. I knew I didn’t want to be a machinist the rest of my life and instead used it as great experience I can apply to product development.

What do you like to do in your free time and why?
I spend of lot of time riding motorcycles in the summer. It requires a lot of focus that can help clear a busy mind and it’s a great time.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Does juggling count? I can also solve a Rubik’s cube, my best time is just under 90 seconds.

Do you have a bucket list? What would be the top item on your list?
I haven’t been skydiving yet. I also want to learn how to surf.

Do you have a favorite sports team? How did you become a fan?
The Detroit Red Wings – I grew up watching hockey and unfortunately didn’t start to play until intramurals in college.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
Pizza. Yes, that includes pineapple.

Where would you like to go on your dream vacation?
A motorcycle tour across Europe would be a lot of fun.
