Meet Team Kadant - Mike Sneary, Business Development Manager

Department/Title: Business Development Manager
Worked at Kadant Johnson Since: October 1980

Tell me about your career path and how you got to Kadant.
I started working as a small engine mechanic at 12 years old. After graduating college with an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering, I worked for Owens Illinois in the plastics product R & D division in Toledo, Ohio. I then moved to Michigan to work as a tool engineer for Federal Mogul’s plastic plant in Mendon, Michigan. Federal Mogul closed this plant and I worked as a design and manufacturing engineer at a couple of places before applying at Kadant Johnson in 1980. I started as a Regional Sales Manager shortly thereafter.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?
I always wanted to be a teacher. Conducting training seminars, working with people of various backgrounds, and learning the process of how things are made have kept me excited about my job. I continue to learn something new daily.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Be considerate to people and listen to what they have to say. There is a lot to learn and many people you can learn from. Never stop learning.

Any special recognitions, awards or accomplishments you’re particularly proud of?
Working for Kadant Johnson (formerly The Johnson Corporation) for over 36 years is something I’m very proud of. I've had articles published in various industry magazines.

Are you a member of any trade/professional organizations? Which ones & what is their purpose?
I represent Kadant Johnson at the Fluid Control Institute (FCI) meetings. FCI is an organization that writes standards for various steam-related products. I have served as section chairman a couple of times and have also served on the board of directors.

Tell me about your family.
I've been married for 33 years and have two children. I also have a granddaughter.

What do you like to do in your free time and why?
I enjoy home remodeling projects and woodworking - mainly making furniture. There is nothing like smelling saw dust.

Do you have any hidden talents?
I used to play drums in high school and a little guitar. I plan on getting back into playing more in retirement.

Do you have a favorite sports team? How did you become a fan?
Ohio State University is my college team. Being born in Ohio, OSU has to be your team. Pro football is the Cleveland Browns. Once a Browns fan, always a Browns fan – win or lose, and Browns lose a lot. Just like Cubs fan hoped, I hope the Browns win the big one someday.
